Choosing a payment partner isn't just about transaction fees. The provider you choose also affects how merchants are onboarded, who manages compliance, how disputes are handled, and how much operational work your team takes on as your platform grows.

Both OPP and Mollie enable platforms to embed payments into their products, but they're designed with different priorities in mind.

This guide compares OPP and Mollie across pricing, compliance, onboarding, support, and platform capabilities to help you determine which solution best fits your business.

Last updated: July 2026. This comparison is based on publicly available product documentation and pricing information available at the time of writing.

Compliance and Risk Management

Compliance is often one of the biggest considerations for platforms handling payments.

The question isn't simply "is the provider licensed?" It's "how much of the compliance burden does my team still need to manage?"

OPP has a Payment Institution license from the DNB (Dutch Central Bank) and an EMI license in the UK from the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority), meaning OPP is passported through the EEA for payments.

Mollie has an EMI license in the EEA from the DNB, and in the UK, a Payment Institution license from the FCA.

Both operate as Payment Facilitators, or PayFacs. In practice, this means the platform doesn't need to become a licensed payment entity itself, or individually vet and onboard every merchant under its own compliance program. The PayFac sits underneath, holding the license, running the KYC checks, and taking on the regulatory responsibility, so the platform can focus on its product instead of becoming a mini payments company on the side.

OPP and Mollie both work this way, but with different license structures per region: OPP holds a Payment Institution license in the Netherlands and an EMI license in the UK, while Mollie holds the reverse, an EMI license in the Netherlands and a Payment Institution license in the UK.

In short:

  • Choose OPP: if you want a partner operating under a Dutch Payment Institution license with direct EEA passporting, giving one consistent compliance framework as you expand across European markets.

  • Choose Mollie: if an EMI-based structure in the EEA, with a separate Payment Institution license specifically for the UK, fits your platform's existing regulatory setup or expansion plans.

Pricing: Transparency vs Simplicity

Every payment provider charges transaction fees, but how those fees are presented can be very different.

OPP

OPP uses itemised pricing. Each payment method has its own clearly defined cost.

For example:

  • Pay-in: from €0.25

  • Business onboarding: €5

  • Consumer onboarding: €0.60

  • Visa / Mastercard: €0.15 + IC++ + 0.60%

  • iDEAL: €0.25

  • Bancontact: €0.35

  • SEPA Direct Debit: €0.30

This makes it easier to understand exactly what each payment method costs.

Mollie

Mollie‘s standard product uses itemised pricing for single merchants. For example (EEA rates):

  • Pay-in: no separate fee, cost is built into the per-method rate below

  • Business onboarding: none, no monthly or setup fees

  • Consumer onboarding: none, no monthly or setup fees

  • Visa / Mastercard (EEA consumer cards): 1.80% + €0.25

  • iDEAL: €0.32

  • Bancontact: 1.40% + €0.25

  • SEPA Direct Debit: €0.35

This pricing is for standard Mollie, built for single merchants. Mollie Connect, the actual product for platforms and marketplaces, isn't publicly priced.

Some sources suggest Connect includes onboarding and per-merchant fees on top of the transaction rate, but since Mollie doesn't publish this pricing directly, it's best to contact their platform team to confirm the exact structure for your use case.

Which is better?

For a single merchant, both providers publish clear, comparable rates, so it's a fair fight on price alone. But this comparison is really about platforms and marketplaces, and that's where the picture changes: OPP's rates above apply directly to its platform and marketplace product, while Mollie's numbers apply to standard Mollie, not Mollie Connect, which is what platforms and marketplaces would actually use.

If you're evaluating this as a platform or marketplace operator, OPP gives you a real number today. With Mollie, you won't know your actual cost until you've had a sales conversation.

Merchant Onboarding

Merchant activation directly affects how quickly sellers can start accepting payments.

OPP

  • Consumer onboarding: approximately 1 working day

  • Business onboarding: approximately 1 -3 working days

OPP’s built-in onboarding is designed to reduce manual intervention while maintaining compliance checks.

Mollie

Mollie also supports streamlined onboarding, but the experience depends on which Connect flow is implemented.

Existing Mollie users may onboard almost immediately, while new merchants requiring full verification may experience longer review times.

Some Connect implementations reportedly support business onboarding only, with consumer onboarding handled differently or not at all, though this isn't confirmed in Mollie's public documentation. Platforms should confirm directly with Mollie's team which onboarding flows apply to their specific use case.

Payment Methods

OPP and Mollie both support a wide range of European and international payment methods.

Typical payment methods include:

  • Visa

  • Mastercard

  • Apple Pay

  • Google Pay

  • iDEAL

  • Bancontact

  • SEPA Direct Debit

  • PayPal

  • Klarna

Mollie has built out an especially deep bench of country-specific methods over the years, including TWINT, BANCOMAT Pay, Satispay, Multibanco, MB Way, Swish, BLIK, Przelewy24, Vipps, MobilePay, and Bizum.

OPP's current method list centers on the core methods platforms rely on most: major card networks, SEPA, iDEAL, Bancontact, PayPal, Klarna, and Open Banking, with additional local methods in active development.

Coverage is expanding on both sides and can shift between the time of writing and your implementation, so if your platform needs a specific regional method, it's worth confirming directly and asking OPP's team what's on the roadmap if you're building for the near term.

Marketplace and Platform Capabilities

Although both providers support platforms, they are optimised for different use cases.

OPP

OPP is designed specifically for platforms that onboard and manage multiple merchants with a focus on C2C and B2B, including:

  • Online marketplaces

  • Second-hand platforms

  • Rental platforms

  • Subscription platforms

  • Delivery services

  • B2B marketplaces

  • Investment platforms

Core to this is escrow functionality and multi-split (split-payment) logic: holding funds securely until a transaction completes, then dividing payouts across multiple parties in a single transaction.

The platform combines merchant onboarding, KYC, wallet management, payouts, transaction monitoring, and dispute handling in a single operational environment.

Mollie

Mollie supports marketplaces through Connect while also serving a broad customer base of e-commerce businesses, SaaS companies, and traditional online merchants.

Its flexibility makes it attractive for businesses that don't necessarily require a marketplace-first operating model.

Dashboard and Operational Control

As payment operations scale, visibility becomes increasingly important.

OPP provides

  • Real-time transaction monitoring

  • Merchant management

  • KYC document management

  • Wallet management

  • Payout visibility

  • Integrated Buyer-seller dispute support

Mollie provides

  • Merchant dashboards

  • Payment reporting

  • Pricing and margin management

  • Connect platform management

The right choice depends on how much operational control your platform requires.

Customer Support

Payment issues often require quick resolution.

OPP runs support as a three-tier, in-house system: first-line multilingual support for onboarding, refund, and payout questions, followed by automated buyer-seller mediation where disputes get resolved through a self-service flow, and finally direct dispute handling for anything that escalates further, including chargebacks and regulatory filings.

Every case is logged and documented for audit purposes, and coverage spans major European languages across 30+ markets. OPP's support is publicly used by platforms like Marktplaats and Royal FloraHolland. Also, OPP offers account management support.

Mollie offers broad account management support across its full product suite, plus dedicated partner managers for eligible Connect customers. This support spans Mollie's entire range of products rather than being built specifically around the complexities of multi-merchant marketplace flows, which is where OPP's in-house, tiered model is purpose-built.

  • Compliance and operational complexity are becoming difficult to manage internally.

  • You want detailed visibility into payment costs.

  • Merchant onboarding speed is a business priority.

  • You want a payment partner with marketplace-specific workflows - like escrow or split-payment logic built in.

  • You primarily serve ecommerce merchants or SaaS businesses.

  • You prefer a simple, predictable pricing model.

  • Your merchant base is relatively stable.

  • You already use or plan to build around the Mollie ecosystem.

What This Means for You

The right choice comes down to how your platform actually operates, not just which provider has the better feature list.

If your platform lets anyone become a seller, whether that's a C2C marketplace, a rental platform, or a sharing-economy portal, your merchant risk is unpredictable by design. That's where compliance ownership and payout logic matter more than a simple fee structure. Before choosing a provider, ask directly:

  • Who is liable if a connected merchant can't cover a chargeback or refund?

  • Does compliance sit with the provider directly, or does it depend on which onboarding flow you configure?

  • Can you see the exact cost of each payment method, or only a blended number?

  • How long does it take a new seller to actually start accepting payments?

Both OPP and Mollie are strong payment providers, but they solve different business challenges.

Mollie is an excellent choice for businesses looking for a well-established European payment provider with simple pricing and broad payment method coverage.

OPP is purpose-built for platforms and marketplaces that need more than payment processing. Its focus on merchant onboarding, compliance management, operational visibility, and marketplace workflows makes it particularly well suited to businesses managing multiple merchants at scale.

The best choice ultimately depends on your platform's operational model, compliance requirements, and growth plans.
